BOLIVAR, MO. ... For not converting a three point basket all throughout the game to that point, Quentin Edwards hit Missouri Southern's (8-9, 4-2 MIAA) only trey to put the Lions up by two with five minutes remaining in the game and MSSU never looked back as they defeated Southwest Baptist (8-7, 2-4 MIAA) 77-72.
In the second half, SBU held a 14 point advantage, but the Lions rallied back using a 21-3 run that lasted over six minutes capped off with Edwards' three-pointer.
MSSU forward Orestus Cavness, who was named earlier this week the Wilson/MIAA Player of the Week led all scorers with 24 points off of 8-14 shooting from the field. Jeremie Bond followed up with a double-double shooting a perfect 6-6 from the field and grabbing down 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Martez Young led all Bearcats with 17 points and shot 3-8 from beyond the arc. Michael Johnson received his first start of the season and tied a career high with 13 points. Deontra Levi also received his first start of the year.
SBU now travels to Topeka, Kansas to go head-to-head with 2003-2004 MIAA regular season champion, Washburn. The Ichabods defeated Truman State on the road Saturday night, 66-56. WU is led by preseason Street & Smith All-America Honorable Mention, Travis Robbins. Robbins is averaging a double-double a game with 21.3 ppg and 10.2 rpg. The game is slated to tip off at 7:30 pm.
