BEARCATS MISFIRE AGAINST CENtrAL MISSOURI ST.

January 6, 2005

[Final Stats]

7-0 center Chris Schulze made his first career three pointers against CMSU and ended the night with 10 points shooting 57 percent from the field.

BOLIVAR, MO. … A team that has made quite the reputation this season for living by the outside shot, Southwest Baptist (7-5, 1-2 MIAA) struggled early and often in Thursday night's game losing to the Central Missouri State Mules (10-2, 3-0 MIAA) 81-65 at the Meyer Sports Center.

After starting the game on a 9-2 run, Central Missouri St. put the clamps down on SBU's deadly three point shooting arsenal holding the Bearcats to a dismal 18% from behind the arc in the first half going 3 for 16.

With 6:15 remaining in the first half, CMSU forward Mike Suggs converted a fast break with a layup and free throw to complete the three point play and from there the Mules went on a scorching 14-2 run to end the half up by 20 points 49-29.

Three Mules combined for 40 of their team's points in the first half including forward Mike Suggs shooting 6-7 from the field and forward Derek Weber converting all eight of his free throw attempts.

Southwest Baptist immediately brought life back into the arena starting the second half exactly like they had in the first, jumping out of the gates with an energetic 11-0 run to cut the lead back within single digits. Three pointers from Deon Davis, Martez Young, and 7-0 center Chris Schulze were scored within the half's first two minutes.

In the end, a twenty point deficit and stifling defense proved too much for the Bearcats. After the 11-0 run, Central Missouri State remained focused and composed as the team that already knocked off two top 25 nationally ranked teams (Pittsburg St. & Washburn) earlier this season and managed to hand SBU their first ever loss at the newly renovated Meyer Sports Center. The Bearcats ended the game knocking down only 8 three pointers, five treys off of their average of 13 per game.

Southwest Baptist next hosts the #18 ranked Pittsburg State Gorillas on Saturday, January 8 at 7:30 pm. Head Coach Jeff Guiot will be coaching against his alma mater for the second time ever. In his first meeting against PSU last season, Coach Guiot lead Bemidji State (MN) to a triple overtime thriller winning 103-100. Guiot was an an all-american as a player at Pittsburg St. and to this day, still holds multiple school records.

KEY STATS: SBU did not even get one free throw attempt in the first half while CMSU went a perfect 12-12. For the game, the Mules out shot the Bearcats from the charity stripe converting 23 out of 25 attempts for the game to 7 for 9 for SBU. In the game of percentages, CMSU shot 54% from the field and 46% from behind the arc while the Bearcats shot only 39% from the field and 25% from behind the arc.
