BOLIVAR, MO. … Hitting their first six three-pointers of the game and jumping out to a 26-4 lead in the first five minutes, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (6-3) ran away from Central Bible College, 125-60. SBU hit 24 three-pointers which broke the SBU and MIAA single season record.
The Bearcats nailed 24 of 43 three-pointers for 55% and hit 12 three-pointers in both periods. SBU had seven players in double figures with Deon Davis coming away with 16 points. Deontra Levi and Cedric Ousley both canned 14 points while Sheldon Pace, Martez Young, and David Martin added 13 points. Rommel Colina rounded out the scoring with 10 points. Martin was also the leading rebounder with six. Will Kitchen and Arjay Johnson had 13 for CBC.
Burning up the nets in the first five minutes of the game, SBU went six-of-six to take command of the game right from the beginning. Ousley hit the first two three-pointers with the first just four seconds into the game. Colina followed that for a 9-0 lead and then Pace made a layup for the 11th point. Two more three's by Deon Davis and a shot by Martin put SBU up 19-2. Pace and Davis extended the lead with back-to-back layups and Michael Johnson finished out the quick run with 15:36 to go in the first half on the sixth three-pointer. SBU missed their next three-pointer but then made two more by Danny Norman and Pace as SBU took a 34-6 lead at the 12:18 mark.
SBU took a 42-point lead on a Martez Young three-pointer at the 4:11 mark and then he gave SBU a 46-point lead at the half when he converted a CBC turnover into two-points with 19 seconds to go.
Slowing down a bit in the second half, SBU did not make a bucket until the 18:40 mark. Two free throws by Colina gave SBU a 50-point lead (16:04) and then Ben Rountree put SBU up by 62 (104-42) with 8:41 to go on a three-pointer. Ousley gave SBU their largest lead, 67 points (111-44) at the 7:00 mark on a three-pointer.
With 00:46 left in the game, freshman Reggie King put SBU over the edge with their 24th three-pointer to break the old SBU and MIAA record that was set earlier this year by the Bearcats vs. Ozark Christian. Emporia State held the old record of 23 three-pointers made vs. SBU last year in the final MIAA game of the year.
CBC shot 35% from the floor and 40% from three-point range for the game. They were held to just 25% from the floor in the first half. SBU out rebounded CBC, 36-32, and forced 28 turnovers while stealing the ball 20 times.
SBU will now take the holidays off as they do not play until December 30, when they host Northwest Missouri State in the MIAA opener at 7:45 p.m.
