GUIOT ERA OPENS WITH A BANG

November 15, 2004

Box / Quotes

BOLIVAR, MO. ... Making a statement in the first game of the 2004-05 season and in the new Jane and Ken Meyer Sports Center, the Southwest Baptist University men's basketball team ran away with the game, 138-44, over Ozark Christian. SBU set three team records and broke one MIAA record.

Coach Guiot says, "Our team was very unselfish tonight when playing. I thought our team played for each other and not themselves tonight. If we continue to do that at both ends of the floor we are going to be a pretty tough team to wreckon with."

With everybody scoring that was on the bench, SBU had six players in double figures. Martez Young and Ben Roundtree led the way with 17 points each while Rommel Colina had 16. Jeffrey Gilmore added 14 and both Danny Norman and Deon Davis had 12 points. Chris Schulze had 12 rebounds, one shy of his career-high. Travis Roberts was the leading scorer for OCC with 13 points. Sheldon Pace added nine assists.

In the first five minutes of the game, SBU jumped out to a 22-4 lead. Ozark Christian picked up four points in the first two minutes and then did not score again until the 8:38 mark, a span of over nine minutes. SBU went six-of-eight in the first seven minutes of the game from three-point range to give the Bearcats a 28-4 advantage. They shot 50% from beyond the arc in the first half as Martez Young was five-of-six. SBU went on to enjoy a 73-12 halftime advantage.

The second half brought 65 points by SBU for a final of 138 points, a new team record. Colina gave SBU a 70-point lead, 82-12, with 18:39 to go on a three-pointer and then at the 13:40 mark Michael Johnson put SBU up by 81 points, 96-15. At the 2:40 mark, freshman Todd Mooney broke the SBU record for points in a game when he canned a free throw to make it 129-43. Roundtree extended SBU's lead to 91-points on two free throws and then made the Bearcats final shot of the game with 00:29 left on the clock for the 94-point win.

Along with the points in a game record broken, SBU shattered the nine year record for three-pointers made with 23 and three-pointer attempts record at 44. The old records were 17 three-pointers (vs. ESU 2/4/1995) made and 35 (vs. MWSC 2/26/2000) attempted. The 23 three-pointers made in a game also tied a MIAA record while the 44 attempts breaks Emporia State's record of 42 attempts vs. SBU last year on February 28, 2004.

Overall, SBU shot 57% from the floor and 52% from the three-point line. They also made 59% of their free throws. They forced 30 turnovers and had 17 steals while outrebounding OCC, 58-35.

SBU will test their run-and-gun offense this weekend as they travel out to Colorado for the Mile High Inn & Suites Classic in Golden, CO. They will take on Colorado School of the Mines on Friday, November 19, at 9 p.m. and the play Mesa State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
