GOLDEN, CO. …After sweeping through two exhibition games with no problems and literally dismantling Ozark Christian by 94 points in the season opener, the SBU Men’s Basketball team suffered its first negative experiences this season losing on back-to-back nights last weekend at the Best Western Central Denver/Mile High Inn & Suites Classic.

The first loss came at the hands of host school, Colorado School of Mines 79-68 on Friday night. CSM earlier in the season took Division I University of Wyoming to overtime and only lost by four points in Laramie, WY. On Saturday, SBU lost 86-71 to 2004 NCAA Tournament participant, Mesa State (CO) on Saturday afternoon.

Facing their first true test of the season, the Bearcats could not find a rhythm against the Orediggers, finding themselves down by double digits in the second half and Head Coach Jeff Guiot getting ejected less than sixteen minutes remaining in the game.

SBU rallied behind their defense to ignite an incredible comeback in hostile territory to tie the game at 65-65, but two consecutive three-pointers by junior guard Kevin Wagstaff swung the momentum back to CSM dropping the Bearcats for their first loss of the season.

Newcomer Deon Davis led Southwest Baptist with a career high 24 points including four shots from behind the arc. Senior Chris Schulze came down with a season high ten rebounds for SBU and junior Sheldon Pace dished out eight assists.

The next day, the Bearcats were matched up with a team who qualified for the 2004 NCAA Tournament in Mesa State. SBU struggled early finding themselves down 20-9 in the first eight minutes, but rallied to score 17 points in the next two minutes to put themselves ahead 26-22 at the 10:14 mark. Southwest Baptist would not see the lead again after that as the Mavericks’ post presence dominated the Bearcats and put the game away winning 86-71.

The Bearcats hit the road again for another two-game weekend, this time traveling up to Kansas City, Missouri for the Rock U Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Rockhurst University. SBU first plays Rockhurst on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm and Park College (MO) on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
