David Henderson was three-points shy of tying his career high 20 points vs. WU. |
TOPEKA, KAN. ... After leading for most of the first half, Southwest Baptist University (5-17/2-11) could not keep up with the #6 Washburn University Ichabods (20-1/12-1) as WU came away with a 86-67 win. SBU was only down two at halftime, 42-40.
David Henderson led the way for SBU with 17 points, just three shy of his career high. Arthur Trousdell came away with 13 points and seven rebounds.
SBU jetted out to a 10-4 lead in the opening two minutes of the first half. Henderson opened up the scoring with two quick three-pointers followed by a Trousdell layup and then another Henderson shot. At the 16:25 mark, SBU took a nine-point lead, 15-6, on a shot by Trousdell. SBU's hopes of extending that lead were cut really quick as WU went on an 8-0 run in three minutes to come within one, 15-14. Two three-pointers in two minutes put SBU back up by five, 21-16, only to see their lead evaporate in two in a half minutes on an Ichabod 11-2 run. In that run, WU took their first lead of the game, 27-23 at the 9:47 mark. SBU came right back at WU with a 7-2 run for a 30-29 lead with only 5:55 left in the half. After exchanging three different leads in just over a minute, SBU tied the game at 34 and then took a four-point lead, 38-34 on two layups by Marcus Jackson. WU battled back to tie the game at 38 and then retook the lead on a fast break layup, 40-38. WIth 1:15 to go, Trousdell tied the game a fourth time at 40 only to see WU hti a shot with 29 seconds left to take the lead into halftime.
WU made a bucket just under one minute into the second half for a four-point lead but Cedric Ousley answered right back at the 18:18 mark to cut the lead to two, 44-42. WU then flexed their muscles with a 9-0 run and an 11-point lead, 53-42 (16:22). The lead was brought back down to six on a bucket by Jarrett Brown and another Henderson three-pointer. SBU's hopes of an upset were shattered over the next five minutes when WU put together a 16-1 run for a 21-point lead, 69-48, with 10:43 left to go in the game. SBU did brush the lead back down to 13 points, 73-60, with 6:36 left in the game, but it was to late and tough to make another run as WU stayed atop the MIAA.
SBU finished shooting 38% from the floor after shooting 47% in the first half. They also went from shooting 50% in the first half from beyond the arc to 33% for the game. Free throws were not on their side either as they were four-of-seven for 57%. WU shot 51% from the floor and 40% from three-point range. WU also out rebounded SBU, 49-35. For the game, 58 of WU's 86 points came in the paint.
SBU will host Missouri Southern at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Februray 14th, at the Davison Field House in MIAA action.
