Three-pointers in the first half gave the University of Missouri-Rolla (9-5/2-3) an advantage early as they went on for a 85-71 win over the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (3-11/0-5). UMR shot 75% from the beyond the arc in the first half.
David Martin's career-high 17 points led SBU along with Arthur Trousdell's 14 points, Jarrett Brown's 11, and David Coutchie's 10. Trousdell was the leading rebounder with eight. Ike Muonelo had 21 points to lead four UMR players in double figures.
Brown and Coutchie gave SBU a quick 5-2 lead in the first half but UMR tied the game at five just two minutes in. Martin's first points of the game put SBU back on top but UMR took an 11-2 run and a seven-point advantage, 16-9, over the next three minutes (13:50). By the 7:44 mark they had extended their lead to 12, 29-17. UMR slowly slipped away with the lead and took a 23-point advantage, 45-22, at the 1:08 mark. SBU ended the half on a 7-1 run to cut into the lead, 45-29.
UMR kept their lead in double digits for most of the second half. At 10:36, UMR had a 16-point lead, 66-50. The Bearcats rallied for a 11-4 run to bring the score to 70-61. After UMR missed a jumper, SBU could not convert on the next possession as they turned the ball over. UMR strengthened their lead in the next five minutes with a 13-6 run (83-67) and only 1:18 left in the game. SBU could not answer and UMR came away with the win.
UMR shot better from three-point range with by nailing 13-21 shots for 61%. They shot 57% from the floor and 62% from the free throw line. SBU canned 6-15 from beyond the arc (40%) and hit 46% from the floor. SBU was outrebounded 32-28 and gave up 21 points off their turnovers.
SBU will be back in action again as they travel to Joplin, Missouri, to take on Missouri Southern on Saturday, January 17th, at 7:30 p.m. |
