Box

November 22, 2003

Seattle, Wash. ... Jarrett Brown hit a three-pointer with 00:40 left in the game to give the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (2-1) a three-point advantage, 63-60, as they held off Seattle Pacific, 65-60, for the win. Marcus Jackson hit two last second free throws to secure the victory.

Brown scored a career-high 22 points en route to being named to the all-classic team. Last night, he had 12 points. Cedric Ousley put up 14 points.

Seattle Pacific dominated most of the first half as they took a six-point lead in the first five minutes, 11-5. SBU battled back to take their first lead, 17-16, on a layup by David Martin. SPU responded quickly by going on a 15-6 run over the next six minutes to take an eight-point lead, 31-23 at the 6:23 mark. It was at this point that momentum changed for the Bearcats. Brown nailed a three-pointer that started a 16-4 run that ran until the end of the half as SBU took a 39-35 lead into halftime.

In the first three minutes of the second half, SBU pushed their lead to nine-points, 46-37, but SPU didn't back down as they slowly ate away at the Bearcats lead. SPU cut the lead to four with 10:50 left and then had it down to two-points at the 4:30 mark. With 2:58 left to play, Ralph Steele tied the game at 56. Back to back buckets by Chris Schulze and Brown put SBU up by four. SPU rallied right back with two free throws and another bucket to tie the game at 60 with only a minute to play.

With 00:48 left to play, the Bearcats called a timeout. Just eight seconds later, Brown hit the go ahead three-pointer for SBU. SPU tried to match the same shot but fell short. Jackson was then fouled with only one-second left as he put in both of his free throws for the five-point win, 65-60.

SBU shot 47% from the floor and three-point range while shooting 77% from the free throw line. They held SPU to just 36% from the floor and 18% from beyond the arc. SBU turned the ball over 23 times to SPU's 12.

Chris Schulze led SBU in rebounding with eight.

SBU will be back in action over the Thanksgiving break as they travel to Kansas City to play in the Rockhurst Classic. They will play Rockhurst University at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 28th and they play Park College on Saturday, November 29th at 2 p.m.
