SLOW START FOR SBU ENDS IN 14-POINT LOSS AT ROCKHURST CLASSIC

Kansas City, Mo. . Rockhurst University (2-4) hit the floor hot against Southwest Baptist University (2-2) as they took a 16-4 lead in the first seven minutes and cruised to a 73-59 win in the first game of the Rockhurst Thanksgiving Classic. RU also outrebounded SBU, 45-23, and shot 48% from the floor.

Leading Southwest Baptist with a career-high 24 points was Jarrett Brown. Chris Schulze added 11 with David Henderson recording 10. David Coutchie and Schulze were the leading rebounders with five.

SBU tied the game at two just two minutes into the game but that is as close as they would come in the game as RU went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes to take control, 16-4. SBU did cut the lead to seven twice (18-11, 24-17) but just could not stop the Hawks rebounding. Just as the buzzer sounded, RU hit a jumper to take a 12-point lead in at halftime, 38-26.

The second half wasn't any easier for the Bearcats. RU extended their lead to 20 in the first four minutes, 50-30. SBU put together an 11-2 run to respond to the 20-point lead and cut the score to 11, 52-41, with 11:18 left to play. The Hawks proved to be too tough for SBU in the final 10 minutes as they pushed their lead to 18 three different times.

SBU shot 46% from the floor and 42% from the free throw line but only had three offensive rebounds. RU also blocked five SBU shots.

The Bearcats will take on Park College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 29 th , at Rockhurst University.
