PITTSBURG, KAN. ...
A last second comeback by the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (3-10/0-4) fell short as the Pittsburg State University Gorillas (10-3/2-2) came away with the five-point win, 74-69. For the third game in a row, senior Jarrett Brown led SBU in scoring with 14 points.
Also scoring in double figures was George Tyus (13), David Coutchie (13), and Marcus Jackson (11). Jamey Richardson led PSU with 18 points and 13 rebounds.
SBU cut the lead to five, 72-67, with just 21 seconds left, but did not get the breaks they needed for the win. PSU hit nine-of-ten free throws in the final 1:36 to seal the win. With 4:10 left in the game, SBU was down 16 points, 65-49, before they put together an 18-7 run to bring the game within five.
The first half was not as pretty as PSU ran their lead to 18 points in the first 10 minutes, 27-9. In the next four minutes, a 11-3 run cut that PSU lead to 10, 30-20, with 6:17 left in the half. Second chance points off of offensive rebounds helped to propel PSU back to a 16-point lead, 40-24, at the 1:24 mark before Cedric Ousley hit a three-pointer before half to trim the lead to 13, 40-27.
PSU out rebounded SBU, 47-35 and had 24 offensive rebounds to SBU's 14. SBU shot 43% from the floor, 29% from the three-point line, and 70% from the free-throw line. They held PSU to just 37% from the floor, 28% from three-point line and 68% from the free throw line.
The Bearcats will host UMissouri-Rolla at 7:45 on Tuesday, January 13th, in the Davison Field House. |
