ST. JOSEPH, MO. ... Late in the first half, Missouri Western State College (10-11/4-8) went on a 18-2 run in four minutes to take a commanding 15-point lead over Southwest Baptist University (5-16/2-10) as the Griffons cruised on for a 85-57 victory. SBU took the lead, 12-11, with 13:23 to go in the half when MWSC went on their run.
David Henderson and Arthur Trousdell led the Bearcats with 10 points. Trousdell also had eight rebounds.
The Griffons took a quick 4-0 lead as they started off the game with two free throws due to a technical on SBU for hanging on the rim in warmups. So, before the game even got started, MWSC already had a 2-0 lead. At the 18:34 mark, they took a 4-0 lead before SBU answered with six points to tie the game at six. In a minute and a half, MWSC scored five points for a 11-6 lead. SBU answered with their own 6-0 run for a 12-11 lead. At this point, MWSC took over the game with the run and never looked back. SBU did get the lead back down to eight, 34-26, with 3:51 to go in the half but MWSC added another run, 12-3, to take a 17-point lead into halftime, 46-29.
The second half was not much better for SBU as MWSC kept the lead over 15 points after the 19:00 mark. They pushed their lead to 21, 63-42, with 11:01 to go. Their biggest lead, 30-points, happened just before the game ended, 85-55, before Henderson hit a layup with 10 seconds left in the game.
SBU shot 36% from the floor and 30% from the three-point line. MWSC hit 50% of their shots and was 52% from beyond the arc. The Griffons also out rebounded SBU, 39-25 and forced 16 turnovers.
The Bearcats will travel to Topeka, Kansas, on Wednesday, February 11th, to take on Washburn University at 7:30 p.m.
