BOLIVAR, MO. ... It was a Valentines Day arrangement delivered to Davison Field House that was ordered Cedric Ousley as he dialed up the game winning three-pointer for Southwest Baptist (6-17/3-11) in overtime over Missouri Southern (14-9/7-7), 88-85. Ousley hit the shot with only 00:02 left on the clock for the win. This win stopped SBU's four game winning streak and is only the second win for SBU over MSSU in 11 meetings.
Five SBU players were in double figures as Jarrett Brown led the way with 22 points. Ousley had 15, David Henderson 14, and Arthur Trousdell and Chris Schulze each added 11. MSSU had four players score 10 or more points with Deon Rose leading all scorers with 24 points.
Opening up the first half on a 12-4 run in the first four minutes, SBU extended their lead to nine, 19-10, at the 13:42 mark. With 9:47 to go in the half, a Brown steal and layup put SBU's lead a 11, 26-15. MSSU responded with a 21-9 run over the next seven minutes to take the lead, 36-35 on a Rose jumper. With 1:54 to go, Ousley drove for the lead, 38-36 only to see Darrell Redmond tie the game at 38. David Martin put SBU back up by two before Ameer Watts tie the game for a third time at 40 heading into halftime.
MSSU's Orestus Cavness gave the Lions the lead back just into the second half but just 16 seconds later Ousley canned a three for a one-point lead, 43-42. Henderson extended SBU's lead to three with a fast break layup at the 18:44 mark. Once again, MSSU put together a solid 11-0 run over the next three minutes to retake the lead by eight, 53-45 (15:47). SBU did cut the lead back dow to two, 53-51 with their own run only to see MSSU push their lead back to seven, 60-53 (11:58). With 8:35 to go, the Lions' Matt Habermehl nailed a three-pointer to extend their lead to nine, 65-56. SBU then took the game into their own hands and ran off a 13-4 run to tie the game at 69 with only 5:12 left to play. There were three ties in the next four minutes. With 1:46 to go, Redmond put MSSU up by three. Just 20 second later, Ousley hit the tying three-pointer to for the third tie at 77. Both teams missed jumpers in the final minute to send the game into overtime.
Ousley hit his third three-pointer of the game at the 3:53 mark in overtime to give SBU the advantage, 80-77. MSSU scored the next four points on a layup by Rose and two free throws by Hiram Ocasio. SBU's Schulze tied the game at 81 with 2:03 to go by making one his two free throws. Rose gave MSSU back the lead with 1:50 to play. Schulze cut the lead to one by making a free throw and then Brown cruised in for a layup with 1:14 to go for an 84-83 SBU lead. With 24 seconds left to go, Ousley hit one of two free throws to make it a two-point game. Then, with only 16 seconds left, Watts ran in for a layup to tie the game at 84. After a SBU timeout, Ousley set up for the game winning three-pointer. SBU then did not let MSSU get a shot off in the remaining seconds as they came away with their third MIAA win.
The Bearcats had a phenomenal game shooting as they shot 51% from the floor and 45% from three-point range. They only shot 55% from the line (16-29). MSSU finished with 44% from the floor and only 21% from three-point range (4-19). Both teams rebounded 37 balls but SBU had 29 turnovers to MSSU's 25.
SBU will be on the road on Wednesday, February 18th, as they travel to Rolla to take on Missouri-Rolla at 7:30 p.m.
