BEARCATS FINISH SIXTH AT MIAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

TOPEKA, KAN. ... In a rain-shortened tournament, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats finished in sixth place overall at the 2004 MIAA Golf Championship held at the Alevmar Golf Course in Lawrence, Kansas. SBU finished 16 shots ahead of Pittsburg State.

SBU shot a 325 on the first day and sat in sixth place and then shot a 159 in the second round before it was stopped ue to rain. They finished with a two day total of 484. Junior Nick Layman was the only top 10 finisher for SBU as he tied for sixth place (77-35=112). Dusty Smith tied for 14th place with a score of 116 (78-38).

Mike Martinez finished in 30th (82-40=122), Tim Speer was 36th (88-47=135), and Tyler Gripka was 37th (91-46=137).

Washburn won the tournament with an overall score of 443 (298-145) and was 14 strokes ahead of second place Central Missouri State (307-150=457).

SBU will now wait and see if they recieve a bid to the NCAA regional tournament.
