Dustin Childress
Making a difference in Southwest Baptist University baseball in just two years as a player, pitcher Dustin Childress returns to help Sam Berg with the pitchers. Childress finished his career at SBU in 2005 and then signed a free agent contract to play Major League Baseball with the New York Mets. He played in the rookie league last summer where he made 16 appearances and pitched in 40 innings while recording 34 strikeouts. He will return to the minor leagues this season to play for single A affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones. Recording a 15-10 record in two years, Childress broke the record for most strikeouts in a season in his first year at SBU with 91. In 2004, he pitched in 94.1 innings and had a 9-3 record while being named to the all-MIAA First-Team and all-Central Region Second-Team. He recorded a 3.15 ERA in 15 starts.
In his second season he went 6-7 and was named to the all-MIAA honorable mention team. He was pre-season all-Central Region pitcher and finished with 68 strikeouts on the year in 14 games started. Overall, he finished his career second on the all-time strikeout list with 159 strikeouts. He started 29 games, pitched in 173.1 innings, and completed nine games. He graduated in May 2005 with a degree in Biology.
