Beginning his third year at SBU, Jeff Abbott will work with the pitchers. He brings a plethora of knowledge to the Bearcats and has a rich family tradition in baseball that he shares with the SBU program.
Abbott, the former holder of the single season strike out record (80), watched pitcher Dustin Childress break his record in the 2004 season as Childress recorded 91 strikeouts. In 1999, Abbott was named to the All-MIAA honorable mention team as a pitcher. In his senior season, he finished 18th in the nation in strikeouts, averaging 11.27 per nine innings. During his summers at SBU, he played in the Ban Johnson league. Prior to coming to SBU, Abbott played for Westark Community College where he pitched for two years.
After graduating from SBU, he went on to play three years of professional baseball in the minor leagues for the Ozark Mountain Ducks and the Rio Grande Valley Whitewings. In 2000, he won a championship with the Whitewings.
Abbott graduate high school in 1994 from North Little Rock H.S. where he lettered all four years in baseball. He was born in Walnut Creek, California, on July 8, 1976. After he graduated in 1994, he played for a select baseball team called Chaffey out of Seattle, Washington.
Jeff comes from a rich tradition of baseball in his family. He is the son Glenn and Patti Abbott. His father, Glenn, played 11 years in the major leagues with Oakland, Seattle, and Detroit. Glenn won two World Series with Oakland (1973) and Detroit (1984). He now coaches in the Texas Rangers organization at the Triple A level. Jeff's older brother Todd also played in the minors for five years in the Oakland Athletics organization.
Abbott will complete his masters in Education from SBU in December 2004.
