BASEBALL COMES AWAY WITH TIE IN SECOND GAME OF DAY

Jason Hines hit his first HR of the year for SBU in the second game. He had 6 RBI in two games and 8RBI overall in the first three games of the 2005 season. |
SEARCY, AR. ... Finishing their trip to Arkansas, the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (0-2-1) came away with a tie on the final day of play, 6-6. They lost the first game of the day, 10-7, and then bounced back with a tie.
Game 1
Eric Beal came in on the first run of the day when HU had a throwing error in the top of the first inning. Skyler Powers picked up an RBI when Josh Baggett came in when Powers grounded out. HU answered back with four runs in the bottom of the first for a 4-2 lead.
HU added two more in the fourth inning to make it 6-2. A Powers double in the sixth inning brought home Kevin Miller to cut the lead to three, 6-3. Again, HU fought right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning for a 10-3 advantage.
Hines brought in three runs in the top of the seventh when he doubled to left center field. Crossing home plate was Baggett, Beal, and Wilkins all with two outs. Hines then scored on the next hit as Miller singled him home. SBU could not get any closer.
Dustin Childress took the loss as he had six strikeouts in four innings of work. He gave up four earned runs and seven hits.
Eric Beal was 2-of-3 to lead the team and Hines had three RBI. Powers added two RBI.
Game 2
SBU jumped out to a 6-0 lead, scoring all six runs in the second inning. Danny Malone singled in the first run and then Chris Martin advanced home on the next hit from a HU throwing error. After a Casey Martin single and Baggett flying out, Jason Hines hit his first home run of the year to make it 5-0. Skyler Powers then singled home Kevin Miller for the final run.
HU picked up two runs in the third inning and then had a four run inning in the bottom of the fifth.HU grounded into a double play to end the inning with the bases loaded as the game was called.
Hines went four innings and gave up six runs while striking out three. John Facteau worked the fifth inning and had only one hit.
Six SBU players each had one hit but Hines led the way with 3 RBI on his first homerun of the year.
SBU will travel to Arkansas Tech on February 15 for a double header with the Wonder Boys. |
