BEARCATS SWEEP HANNIBAL-LAGRANGE

BOLIVAR, MO. ... The Southwest Baptist University Bearcats (2-4-1) picked up their first two wins of the year with a sweep over Hannibal-LaGrange College (1-4). SBU won the first game 7-2 and then came from behind win game 2, 6-5.

Dustin Childress earned his first win of the 2005 season. He recorded eight strikeouts in the win.

Game 1

Dustin Childress earned his first win of the 2005 season as he struck out eight HLC players in 6.1 innings pitched. He only gave up one earned run and fiv hits.

SBU scored first in the third inning when Spencer Wilkins came home off of an error on the catcher. SBU made it 2-0 in the fourth inning when Seth Burrell singled in Stark, who reached by hitting a triple.

HLC cut the lead to one in the top of the fifth but SBU added another when Dziurawiec came home on an Eric Beal single. The Bearcats added insurance runs in the sixth inning by putting up four runs. Wilkins hit his second home run of the year for three RBI and then Kevin Miller doubled to score Dziuraweic.

Stark went 2-of-4 for two RBI to lead SBU. John Facteau finished the last 0.2 innings of work for SBU as he recorded the last two outs on ground balls.

Game 2

Skyler Powers drove in the tying and game winning runs vs. HLC while also throwing out a runner in the eighth inning. He went 3-of-5 vs. HLC in game two.

Skyler Powers grounded in Beal for the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one runner on and one out, HLC intentionally walked to bring up Powers. Up to this point, Powers had only two hits in eight at bats. Powers accepted the challenged and pushed SBU to victory with his single to left center.

Powers led SBU by going 3-of-5 with one RBI. Eric Beal was other Bearcat to receive a hit. SBU had no hits through four innings of play.

HLC put two runs up in the second inning and then SBU scored three runs on no hits in the bottom half of the second, all with two outs.

The Trojans tied the game at three in the top of the third and then made it 5-2 in the fifth inning. SBU chipped away at the lead as they scored one in the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the game. Powers led off the fifth inning with a double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then came home when Seth Burrell hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Powers brought home the tying run in the sixth inning when he singled in Casey Martin. SBU had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth with only one out, but HLC struck out the next two SBU batters to end the inning.

SBU ended HLC threat early. After Beau Davis walked the first batter, HLC's Wieshhaus fouled out to Powers and then Powers threw out the runner on first when he tried to steal. Davis then struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Beal started the eighth inning with a walk and the advanced to second on a wild pitch. HLC decided to intentionally walk Hines, again, which set the stage for Powers. Powers finished the game when he signaled in Beal for the win.

SBU used four pitchers in the game. Davis came away with the win as he pitched the final inning and did not give up any hits with one strikeout. Hines started the game and went four innings with eight strikeouts and two earned runs on six hits. John Facteau followed and when one inning giving up two runs on two hits. Mike Cutler pitched the next two innings and had one strikeout and one hit.

SBU will be home on Friday, February 25, when they host Rockhurst University at 12 p.m.
