BEAVERTON, OR. … Leading Southwest Baptist to their best start since the 1989-90 season, head coach Jeff Guiot was named the NCAA Division II Bulletin "Coach of the Month" for the Bearcats start. SBU is currently 13-0 and ranked #7 in the NCAA Division II poll.
Guiot, who will try for a school best 14-0 start tonight against Pittsburg State, has led SBU to their highest ranking since the 1990-91 season when the Bearcats were ranked as high as #2 in the nation. The 13 wins is a NCAA Division II best and SBU is one of three undefeated teams left in the top 25.
In his second season at SBU, the Bearcats have jumped each week in the poll. They started the preseason with five votes and by week two were ranked #24. In week three they jumped 11 spots to #13 and then six spots to #7 in the latest poll. The next poll will not be released until January 10th.
Last year Guiot led SBU to a 16-13 record and finished tied fourth in the MIAA. This was SBU's first winning record and best finish in the MIAA in 10 years. He also guided SBU to their first MIAA Tournament win in 10 years with a 71-65 win over Northwest Missouri State. Point guard Sheldon Pace was also the first SBU player to be named a First-Team selection since the 1990-91 season.
SBU will try for their 14th straight win at 7:45, tonight, in the Meyer Sports Center against Pittsburg State.
