Last second shot doesn't fall for SBU in loss to St. Mary's

LAS VEGAS, NV. ... Falling short of their eighth win of the year, Southwest Baptist's (7-3) final two shots of the game did not fall in the final 10 seconds of the game as St. Mary's took a one-point win, 64-63.  SBU was down by as many as nine before they mounted a come back to retake the lead with just under a minute to go in the game.  The loss ends SBU's five-game winning streak.

With 1:03 left in the game, Amy Dodd gave SBU a two-point lead, 63-61, over St. Mary's but St.M's Juanita Merchant hit her only 3-pointer of the day with 20 seconds left to push the Rattlers to a one-point lead, 64-63.  SBU drove down the court and had two shots within five seconds but both did not go in as St.M grabbed the rebound with two seconds left. 

Freshman Courtney Creed led all scorers with a career-high 25 points.  She scored 15 points in the second half and when SBU went on a 14-2 run to retake the lead after being down nine points she scored 10 of the 14 points.   Livia Brito recorded her first double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds. 

In the game, there were 16 lead changes and 10 ties.  SBU did not hit a bucket in the final 5:12 of the first half as St. Mary's took a 30-27 lead into the half.  In the second half, St. Mary's kept the lead until the 6:48 mark when Creed made a layup for a 50-49 lead.  SBU had been down by nine and came back to retake the lead. In the final six minutes, there were five lead changes. 

SBU shot 41% from the floor as ST. Mary's shot 40%.  SBU out rebounded the Rattlers 45-33 but turned the ball over 20 times.  St. Mary's scored 27 points off of SBU's turnovers. 

The Lady Bearcats will play Texas A&M-Commerce at 5 p.m. pacific time on Wednesday as they seek their eighth win of the year.
