BOLIVAR, Mo. -- For second year head coach J.C. Carter and his SBU women's basketball team, the challenge awaits. As if an MIAA schedule filled with nationally ranked squads wasn't enough of a hurdle, Carter has filled the 2009-10 non-conference slate with quality opponents, including a trip to the nation's capital to play Division I Georgetown, who reached the quarterfinals of the Women's NIT last year. The full schedule also includes five teams that qualified for last season's NCAA Division II national tournament.
"Our upcoming season brings a lot of excitement in that we are playing one of the most competitive schedules in the country," said Carter. "We feel that playing against a Big East (Georgetown) and an Atlantic 10 (St. Louis) opponent will help prepare us for the MIAA."
The Bearcats open with an exhibtion contest at Division I Saint Louis University on November 5. Their regular season tips off on Friday, November 20 versus Maryville in the Quincy (Illinois) Tipoff Tournament. The following day SBU will play either the host Quincy Lady Hawks or the Iowa Wesleyan Tigers. The Bearcats return home for a midweek contest against Northeastern State (Okla.). on November 24.

A new tradition will follow on Thanksgiving weekend, with the SBU Thanksgiving Classic. The two-day event will feature both the SBU women's and men's squads, along with three visiting teams for each sport. The visiting women's teams include Central Missouri, Drury and Quincy while the visiting men's teams include Emporia State, Henderson State and Dallas Baptist. The SBU women will play Quincy on Friday, November 27 and local rival Drury on November 28.
SBU opens MIAA play on December 2 in Warrensburg against the Jennies of Central Missouri. The big contest against the Georgetown Hoyas occurs in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, December 8. Two home contests follow prior to the Christmas break, including Pittsburg State and Ouachita Baptist.
Conference play continues on December 28 at Missouri Southern followed by a trip to Truman on December 30. Home games with traditional powers Emporia State and Washburn open the 2010 part of the schedule. The rest of January's slate includes trips to Fort Hays and Northwest Missouri State, along with home games with Nebraska-Omaha, Missouri Western, Central Missouri and Missouri Southern.
The month of February starts with a trip to Pittsburg State on February 3. After a home contest with Truman on February 6, it's road trips to Emporia and Washburn, home against Fort Hays and a trip to Nebraska-Omaha. Senior night for the SBU Bearcats will be a "Battle of the Bearcats" against Northwest Missouri on February 23. SBU closes the regular season on February 27 at Missouri Western.
