Baseball Bearcats snap skid in split with Griffons

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The SBU baseball Bearcats defeated Missouri Western 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader before falling 7-4 in the nightcap. The game one win by the Bearcats snapped a 19-game losing streak which dated back to March 13 against Truman.

Missouri Western (23-21, 12-16 MIAA) got on the board with a run in the second inning of game one, before the Bearcats tied the game in the fourth when Justin Barnhart scored following an MWSU error. Western would add two in the fourth and another in the fifth, before the Bearcats (8-30, 6-20 MIAA) would rally for the victory.

In the sixth, Justin Crumpley would single to left to drive in Jason Asher and Kyle Wise would score on a dropped third strike error by the MWSU catcher. Trailing 4-3 entering the seventh, Kyle Tormanen drew a two-out walk and went to third on a single from Barnhart. Asher singled to bring home Tormanen, tying the game. Wise would single to right which scored Barnhart.

Greg Seay would finish the complete game to pick up his third win of the season. Tormanen, Asher and Wise would each have two hits for the Bearcats.

Game two saw the 'Cats get three runs in the first inning on a bases loaded double by Wise. Western would get a run in the first, two in the second and single runs in the third and fourth. SBU added a run in the fourth on an RBI single from A.J. Roller. MWSU would add two more runs in the eighth to seal the victory.

Ray Kelly went seven innings but picked up the loss after allowing six runs.

The series continues Friday, April 17, with a doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
