Softball splits twinbill at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The SBU softball Bearcats snapped an 18-game losing streak to the Washburn Lady Blues, winning game one 4-3 before losing a pitching duel 1-0 in the nightcap that saw both team's starters take no-hitters late into the game.

Washburn (20-25, 7-7 MIAA) scored first in the opener on a home run from Tish Williams in the second inning. SBU (20-30, 3-11 MIAA) responded with a sacrifice fly from Taressa Gomez that scored Krysta Baderdeen.

After the Lady Blues scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, SBU got three runs in the sixth innning. Sarah Brison doubled to score Nina Amaro Garcia. Brison would later score on a sac fly by Thelmeca Chambers. Baderdeen would later single to score Aleece Nalbandian.

SBU would get solid pitching from the starter, Brittney Wood, who went four innings and allowed just two earned runs, and Garcia, who picked up the win after throwing three innings with only one run allowed. Baderdeen and McKenzie Mortimer recorded three hits each in the contest. The win was the first for SBU over Washburn since April 21, 2001.

Game two saw both starters, SBU's Josie Rose and WU's Kayla Long, take no-hitters deep into the contest. Mortimer got the game's first hit in the top of the sixth. Rose continued her no-no into the seventh inning when WU's Ashley Podschun singled with one out. Podschun would advance on a sac bunt and throwing error and would score on a two out hit by Whitney Tapp.

Rose (12-16) picked up the tough loss, despite going 6 2/3 innings with just two hits allowed and one unearned run. Long (7-10) earned the shutout win, striking out five in seven innings, also with two hits allowed.

SBU will take on Emporia State in Emporia, Kansas, on Saturday, April 18, with the doubleheader starting at 2:00 p.m.
