SBU golfers tie for 6th at Ichabod Invitational

TOPEKA, Kan. -- The SBU Bearcat golf team tied for sixth place at the Washburn Ichabod Invitational, which was shortened by rain to 18 holes at the Topeka Country Club. SBU and Lincoln had team scores of 19-over 303 to finish in sixth.

SBU's top individual finish was Justin Sellin at 1-over 72, joining eight other golfers with the score to tie for fourth place. SBU's Bryan Steele finished tied for 22nd with a 75 while Matt Buschman was tied for 41st with a 78.

Central Oklahoma won the team event with an 8-over score of 292. UCO's Colby Shrum and UCM's Justin Yoder shared medalist honors with one under par scores of 70.

The event was also an MIAA point standings contest for the conference squads. Central Missouri picked up eight points as the highest finishing MIAA school and increased their league-leading total to 24 for the 2008-09 season. Missouri Southern picked up six points to remain in second with 18 points overall. SBU gained five points from the WU event and sits in fourth place with 14 points for the season among the eight MIAA golf schools.

Heading into the MIAA Championships (where event points are doubled: 1st-16, 2nd-14, etc.), SBU trails Washburn by 3.5 points for third place and Missouri Southern by four points for second place. The MIAA Championships will be held next Monday and Tuesday, April 20-21, at the Shoal Creek Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo.
