KIRKSVILLE, Mo. -- The Truman State Bulldogs defeated the SBU Bearcats 87-80 Saturday afternoon at TSU's Pershing Arena.

Courtney Creed led the Bearcats (7-14, 4-10 MIAA) with 18 points, one of five SBU players in double figures. Rachel Graves and Courtney Heady had 14 each, Mia Gilreath had 12 and Cortney Shewmaker added 10 points. Jasmine Sanford led with 6 rebounds. TSU was led in scoring by a career high 24 points from Breanna Daniels and also put four other players in double figures.

“We didn’t play very good defense,” said head coach J.C. Carter. “They were averaging 60 points and scored 87. We have to make up our mind to play defense and stop the dribble drives to the hole. We also need to play with more urgency and focus. Sometimes if our shots are falling, our defense turns bad.”

Truman’s largest margin in the first half was seven points on two occasions near the ten-minute mark. Graves hit a trey with two minutes left in the first to give SBU a four point cushion, their largest of the first half. A jumper from Truman’s Daniels sent the teams to the break tied at 34.

The Bulldogs (5-17, 2-13 MIAA) pushed their lead to as much as nine points in the second, at four different times. SBU could only get to within five points in the final minute but TSU would hit free throws to seal it.

A sloppy game saw the teams commit a combined 36 turnovers, with 21 miscues by the Bulldogs. Both teams did shoot well from long distance, with SBU going 8-for-19 (42%) and TSU hitting 6 of 12. Truman also shot 58% from the field for the game.

SBU is right back in action on Tuesday night when they host Emporia State with a 5:30 tipoff in the start of a two-game home stand against nationally-ranked opponents in Emporia State and Washburn.
