KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- SBU's Daniel Prerad has been named the MIAA Athlete of the Week for men's tennis.
Prerad, a 6-foot-6 senior from Perth, Australia, played a key role in the Bearcats clinching their 14th MIAA men's tennis championship Sunday (April 27) in Topeka, Kan.
He and junior doubles partner Emilio el Alabi rallied from a 6-2 deficit in the tiebreaker of No. 1 doubles in the title match against Washburn, scoring eight of the next 10 points to secure a 9-8 (10-8) win over Rutger Vliegenberg and Andrew Plun and put SBU on top of the Ichabods, 2-1.
Playing No. 5 singles, Prerad defeated Plum, 6-1, 6-3, to clinch the match and give his team a 5-1 victory. Both singles and doubles wins avenged earlier regular season losses for Prerad.
He and el Alabi had two other doubles wins last week -- 8-6 over Paul Raukin and Artus Barqualle of Rockhurst (Mo.) on Tuesday (April 22) and 8-5 against Northwest Missouri State's Lucas Ariboni and Daniel Usieto in the first round of the MIAA Tournament Saturday (April 26).
Prerad also posted a 6-1, 6-2 singles win over Rockhurst's Zach Neuell as the Bearcats concluded regular season play with a 7-2 win over the Hawks.
Prerad, a two-time MIAA Sportsmanship Award winner and SBU's lone senior, is a graduate of Applecross Senior High School.
