SBU's Chelsey Janzen, MIAA Athlete of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- SBU's Chelsey Janzen has been named the MIAA Athlete of the Week for women's tennis.

Janzen, a 5-foot-6 senior from Enid, Okla., was was 2-1 in No. 2 singles and 3-1 in No. 1 doubles with partner Jolee Cook as the Lady Bearcats capped off a 4-0 week with their first MIAA championship.

After she and Cook lost to Lisa Pendrak and Carolina Amaral of Northwest Missouri State, 8-3, in doubles, Janzen finished off SBU's comeback by securing the deciding point with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Veronica Castilla for a 5-3 team victory.

Janzen's win avenged a loss to Castilla in the regular season.

She lost to Truman's Lindsy Blair in the semifinal match, 6-3, 6-4, after she and Cook downed Blair and Courtney Walther in doubles, 8-4. The SBU doubles tandem also earned a point in a 5-0 first-round win over Fort Hays State with an 8-4 victory over Samantha Islas and Brette Baldwin.

In the regular season finale against Rockhurst (Mo.) April 22, Janzen and Cook defeated Kandice Belauer and Jaycie Schmidt in doubles, 8-3, then Janzen claimed a 6-3, 6-1 triumph against Caitlin Bucley.

Janzen is a graduate of Enid High School.
