JOPLIN, Mo. -- Southwest Baptist University Track and Field teams travelled to Missouri Southern State University this past Friday for their second outdoor meet of the season. The meet was a smaller meet but that did not stop a couple SBU records from getting broken.
The highlight of the meet was from Alyssa Maggart and Courtney Ayers.
Alyssa Maggart ran a 2:15.66 to break the old school record of 2:16.40 and win first place, beating three Oklahoma State University Athletes. The SBU women went 1-5-6-8 in the 800 with every girl but one running a PR. Kelsi Chowning 2:16.93, Mallory Roth 2:17.75, Kassidy Porter 2:19.02.
Courtney Ayers was the other person to have one of the SBU records in her sights. Courtney ran a 10:29.34 to place 6th place and break the old school record of 10:33.69 held by Christine McEhaney (Showler) set in 2006.
Other races that came near to SBU records was the women’s 4x400 meter relay team. The team made up of Jennifer Gillespie, Mallory Roth, Kassidy Porter, and Jenny Blair ran a 3:59.20 just missing the record of 3:58.36. Their time is currently #1 in the conference.
On the men’s side, three men that won their events and the men’s 4x400 meter relay just missed the SBU school record.
Jeff Weseloh ran a lifetime personal best of 50.66 to win the 400 meter dash, his time is currently ranked 7th in the conference.
Michael Pierce won the 800 meter run with a 1:55.37. This was in preparation for the Kansas University Relays Invite Mile. Michael was one of 10 athletes invited to this prestigious event.
Jeremy Glassmaker won the 1500 meter run with a 3:57.76, a personal best of over 3 seconds. His time currently ranks him #3 in the conference standings.
Coach McElhaney, “Overall both teams did very well. This was a smaller meet so I had a lot of the athletes double and triple races. I am proud of everyone toughing through their second and third events. We also had a couple athletes who are battling injuries and did not have the times they were hoping for. It is tough when our outdoor season is so short, when an athlete gets injured they have to try and get it taken care of before the next weekend. We are looking forward the DII Challenge at Emporia State University. This meet usually has some tough competition and will be a good race before we go to the KU Relays.”
