[Game 1]
BOLIVAR, MO. ... A six-run sixth inning gave #9 Emporia State University an 8-1 lead that they held onto as they won the series over Southwest Baptist University. SBU is 21-28 on the season.
Emporia State entered the sixth inning with just a one-run lead, 2-1, but unloaded for six runs after a controversial call at the plate. With no outs, ESU's Nick Carlson hit a chopper to SBU's Casey Martin at second base. Martin scooped the ball up and threw it to home plate as SBU's catcher Skyler Power's blocked the plate. The throw was on time and it looked as if SBU had recorded their first out when ESU's Mark McBratney was called safe. This controversy brought out SBU head coach Sam Berg to discuss the situation but no progress was made.
After the call, ESU scored three more runs before SBU recorded the first out. After it was all said and done, ESU scored six runs on four hits to blow the game open, 8-1.
SBU took the early lead, 1-0, in the Kevin Miller hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Joel Gould.
The Bearcats kept the one run lead until the fourth inning when the Hornets hit back-to-back home runs to take a 2-1 lead.
Beau Davis made his final outing in a Bearcat uniform as he took the loss. He ended the game with two straight strikeouts to record five on the game. Gabe Medina won his 10th game for ESU.
Gould led SBU with two hits as he was 2-of-4.
Game two was a rain out due to the weather and will not be made up.
SBU will lose four seniors in Gould, Davis, and Chris and Casey Martin. The 20-win season for Coach Sam Berg is his second straight and third overall in his seven years at SBU.
