JOPLIN, MO. ... High powered offenses took control of both games as 37 runs were scored in a combined two games played at Missouri Southern. Southwest Baptist University won game one, 9-7, but fell 11-10 in game two.
Game 1
SBU 9, MSSU 7
Zane Montgomery went the distance in seven innings for his 11th win of the year. He gave up 11 hits but struck out nine. SBU pounded out 12 hits as four players had two hits each. Joel Gould recorded three RBI while Beau Davis had two.
SBU was down early as MSSU scored three in the first inning. The Bearcats answered back in the 2nd inning with three runs to tie the game. Gould singled home Chris Martinez for the first run with two outs in the inning. Both Casey Martin and Gould each scored on MSSU errors to tie the game at three.
Scoring in the next three innings, SBU took a 9-3 advantage after the 5th inning. Adding two more runs in the 3rd inning, SBU made it 5-3 on a Davis home run to also score Kevin Miller.
Gould homered in the 4th inning for the first run as it was the 2nd homer of the game for SBU. Miller then singled in Jason Asher for a 7-3 lead.
Chris Martinez brought home Skyler Powers in the 5th inning to make it 8-3 and then Gould recorded his 3rd RBI of the game on a groundout to score Martinez.
MSSU made things interesting in the bottom of the 7th inning as they scored four runs to cut the lead to two, 9-7. MSSU had two runners on base when Gaydusek struck out to end the game.
Gould, Asher, Davis, and Martinez all had two hits in the game with Gould and Davis collecting home runs.
Game 2
What looked like a sweep for SBU turned into a loss quickly after an eight-run 8th inning for MSSU. SBU had a 8-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 8th when the Bearcats gave up eight runs as the Lions took a 10-8 lead.
In the top of the 9th, SBU scored two runs to tie the game at 10. Both Montgomery and Miller scored on an error to tie the game at 10. In the bottom of the 9th, Miller came into pitch for Nick Henderson and gave up a walk off home run to end the game, 11-10.
Chris Martinez went 3-of-5 with two RBI and Asher, Baggett, and Miller each had two hits. Baggett's two hits were a triple and a home run. Martinez also homered for SBU.
J.R. Smith started the game and went five innings and only gave up two runs. Ray Kelly then pitched the next two innings and struck out two with only one hit. In the 8th inning, Davis started and faced two batters before Murray went only 0.1 innings. Murray gave up six runs on five hits. Henderson went 0.2 innings in the 8th and then Miller pitched in the 9th.
SBU will host Washburn University this weekend in a four game series beginning with two games on Friday, April 14.
