KANSAS CITY, MO. ... Gaining their first sweep of the year, the Southwest Baptist University softball team took two games from Rockhurst in Kansas City. SBU is now 13-18 on the year.
SBU claimed a tight game one, 3-2, and then shutout Rockhurst, 7-0, in game two.
Game 1
It was the Cyndi Euliss hitting clinic in game one as she accounted for all three SBU runs. She finished the game 2-of-2 with three RBI.
After two scoreless innings, freshman Cyndi Euliss hit her second home run of the year to give SBU a 1-0 lead. Euliss gave SBU a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when she doubled home Stephanie Martin and Tara Phillips to make it 3-0.
RU put a fight in the bottom of the 6th inning when they scored two runs. SBU pitcher Lyndsey Fisher gave up a home run and then a triple in back-to-back batters to make it 3-1. The next batte singled to put two runners on but then the SBU defense turned a double play for two outs as a run scored. Fisher then proceded to strike out the next batter to end the inning. In the bottom of the 7th, Fisher only faced three batters to end the game as the first batter popped out and the other two grounded out.
In the game, Fisher struck out five batters.
Game 2
SBU pounded out eight hits for seven runs in game two for a 7-0 win.
Cheratin Dunn doubled home Michelle Thompson for the first of three runs in the second inning. A batter later, Dunn scored on an error by the first baseman. Euliss then scored the third run on another error.
Two more runs scored in the 6th inning to make it 5-0. Dunn singled in the first run and then scored later in the inning on a Tara Phillips single.
Stephanie Martin started off the 7th inning with a home run for a 6-0 advantage. Mary Nguyen was the final run to score when she crossed home plate as RU was throwing out Rebecca Cook at second base.
Martin improved to 8-8 on the year as she pitched a complete game with six strikeouts. Dunn led SBU in hitting as she was 3-of-3 with two RBI.
SBU will face Truman State on Friday in Kirksville, Missouri, and then take on NW Missouri State on Saturday.
