BOLIVAR, MO. ... The bats awoke for Southwest Baptist University as the Bearcats swept Upper Iowa University, 3-0 and 12-6, to improve to 11-7. 

Chris Martinez had seven RBIs on the day for SBU with a home run, double, and sacrifice fly.

Game 1

After five scoreless innings, SBU scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 3-0 win.  Kevin Miller barely beat the tag at home plate for the first run in the sixth  on a Martinez single.  Spencer Wilkins then singled to center field to add two more runs as Martinez and Skyler Powers scored.

Zane Montgomery improved to 7-0 with a complet game, three-hit shutout.  UIU did not get their first hit of the day until the third inning. Four of the final nine batters he faced he struck out.  In the top of the seventh, he struck out the side to finish with eight strikeouts. 

Chris Martinez had seven RBIs on the day vs. Upper Iowa.

Game 2

The bats came alive for SBU in game two as they scored 12 runs in six innings.  SBU started off the game with two runs in the first.  Miller brough home the first run on a single up the middle and then Martinez had a sacrifice fly to score Miller from third.

The third inning brought five runs with three coming on a Martinez home run over left center field.  Kyle Griffon singled up the middle to bring in Bobby McMillin for the fifth run of the inning.  The first run came when Powers singled home Jason Asher. 

Ian Murray had a no-hit game through four innings and then UIU scored four in the top of the fifth to cut the game to four, 7-4.  The Peacocks added one more run in the top of the fifth to make it 7-5. 

SBU responded with five runs for a 12-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.  Martinez brought in the first two runs with a single to left field and then McMillin singled in Spencer Wilkins for the third run of the inning.  With the third straight single of the inning, Chris Martin hit in Martinez.  McMillin scored on the next batter when there was a throwing error to home plate from left field for the fifth run.

UIU added one run in the top of the seventh but that is all they received to make it 12-6.

Murray won his first game of the year by pitching five innings with three strikeouts and only one walk.  Ray Kelly pitched the sixth inning and then McMillin finished the game.

Martinez was 2-of-3 with six RBIs in the game.  Miller, McMillin, Chris Martin, and Griffin each had two hits. 

SBU will host Upper Iowa in a nine inning game on Saturday, March 18, at 12 p.m.
