ST. JOSEPH, MO. … Down by four at the half, Southwest Baptist University cut the lead to three, 25-22, with 18:03 left in the game, as Missouri Western went on an 18-6 run for a 15-point lead and eventually the win over the Lady Bearcats, 64-50.  SBU didn’t get any closer than 10 points.

Freshman Cortney Shewmaker led SBU with 17 points as she was the only player in double figures.  MWSU’s Inga Buzoka led all scorers with 22 points.

Running out to a 5-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game, SBU held onto their lead until the 10:10 mark when MWSU’s Brandi Rodgers made a free throw for the one-point lead.  At the 16:58 mark, SBU had a 7-2 run when the Lady Griffons started a 16-4 run over 10 minutes to take a seven-point lead, 18-11.  MWSU never lost the lead after that run.  MWSU took a four-point advantage at the half, 23-19, as SBU missed a three-pointer at the buzzer to try and cut the lead to one.

The scoring affair in the first half was led by poor shooting by both teams as the cold front hit the MWSU Fieldhouse.  SBU shot 25% while the Lady Griffons shot 28% from the floor.  The cold front also affected the three-point shooting as SBU was 1-of-13 (7%) and MWSU didn’t even find the net on seven attempts.

With the cold shooting improving in the second half both teams shot over 43%.  The difference was SBU had 16 turnovers that propelled MWSU to the win.  SBU did come within three early in the second half but MWSU’s 18-6 run put the Lady Griffons up by 15 points, 43-28, at the 9:27 mark.  SBU did cut the lead to  10, 43-33, but that is as close as they came.

Casey Beavers.
The three-point shot was dry for both teams as SBU only made 22% (5-of-22) while MWSU was 1-of-15 (6%).  SBU shot 33% overall while MWSU shot 37%.  MWSU made 85% of their free throws (17-of-20) as SBU made 63% (7-of-11).  MWSU also outrebounded SBU 42-40.  SBU turned the ball over 26 times to MWSU’s 18.

SBU will not play again until February 11 when they host NW Missouri State at 5:30 p.m. in Bolivar.

Notes: This was the 10th time Cortney Shewmaker has scored 10 or more points in a game and the second time she scored 17…It is the fifth game this season that Amy Dodd has made all of her shots in the game (3-of-3)…She has now made five shots in a row over the past two games…This is 11th game this year that SBU has turned the ball over 20 times…MWSU leads the series 28-7 and has won the last three series.
