BOLIVAR, MO. ... Holding off a last second effort from Missouri Western (11-7/2-5), #6 Southwest Baptist University (17-1/6-1) took a 75-74 overtime win over the Griffons to keep a 10-game winning streak at home in the Meyer Sports Center. SBU took the 75-74 lead with 2:24 left in overtime and then played a strong defense for the win.
With just 00:18 left in the game, MWSU's Demarius Bolds shot was blocked out of bounds by SBU's Jim Grabowski. MWSU then inbounded the ball for a shot but missed and received a second chance with 15 seconds left on an offensive rebound by Kenny Oliver. As the clock wound down to 00:03, Bolds held for the last shot and was denied as he missed the shot and SBU came down with the rebound as time ran out.
SBU scored the first five points of overtime in the first minute and then held on for the win as they only allowed MWSU four points.
Recording his second double-double of the year, Grabowski led SBU with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Four other players were in double figures for SBU in Jason Jemison (14), Frans Steyn (13), Sheldon Pace (12), and Juan Lopez (10). Bolds led MWSU with 23 points.
Pace turned on the scoring in the final 3:20 of the game where he scored six of the final 10 points of the game for SBU. In OT, he had two of the five points to come away with 12.
With MWSU clinging to a two-point lead, 63-61 (3:30), Pace drove to the hole and tied the game at 63. MWSU went on a 5-0 run to take a 68-63 with just 2:07 left to play. A Colt Blair three-pointer (1:48) cut the lead to two and then Pace nailed two free throws with 1:04 left in the game to tie it at 68.
Bolds nailed a layup at the 00:40 mark but Pace was fouled with jsut 32 seconds left as he tied the game at 70. Bolds tried to give MWSU the win with 00:05 left but again Pace grabbed the defensive rebound to send the game to overtime.
SBU had control of the second half until MWSU ate away at SBU's 10-point lead, 50-40 (13:35) over 11 minutes. MWSU outscored the Bearcats 28-13 in this time for a five-point lead, 68-63.
The first half was close as SBU only had a nine-point lead late in the half as there were three ties. SBU was up three, 28-25, when they went on a 8-2 run for a nine-point lead, 36-27, over a two minute span. The Bearcats then took a seven-point lead into the half, 38-31.
SBU shot 42% overall and 50% in the first half but only 28% from three-point land. MWSU finished shooting 42% and 41% from the free throw line (5-of-12). SBU had 19 turnovers to MWSU's 11 but out rebounded the Griffons, 45-34.
The #6 Bearcats will host Missouri Southern at 7:45 on Tuesday, January 24, in the Meyer Sports Center.
