BOLIVAR, MO. ... After coming within two-points, 60-58, with 4:31 to play in the game, Pittsburg State outscored Southwest Baptist 9-5 for a 69-63 win in MIAA play. SBU is now 8-5 on the season.
Livia Brito led SBU with 19 points as she made 9-of-10 from the free throw line. Casey Beavers and Amy Dodd each had 10 points while Beavers had nine rebounds. PSU's Tracy Patry led all scorers with 22 points.
PSU had as large as an 11-point lead in the second half before SBU widdled away at the lead. With 18:15 to go in the game, PSU led 38-27 when SBU went on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 42 (12:54). Brito had six of her 19 points in the run and Amy Dodd teid the game on two free throws. PSU slowly pushed their lead back to 10 as the Gorillas were up 58-48 at the 7:38 mark. In the next three minutes, had a 10-2 run to bring the Gorillas lead to two, 60-58. This is as close as SBU would come to a win. PSU had a 5-0 run to extend their lead to seven.
SBU ran out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of the first half but PSU scored seven straight for a 7-4 lead as they never gave it up again in the game. PSU ran their lead to 12 at the half, 34-22.
SBU shot a dismal 30% from the floor and 21% from three-point range but made 92% from the free throw line. They forced 22 turnovers but PSU shot 49% from the floor and 40% from three-point land. PSU also out rebounded SBU, 41-30.
The Lady Bearcats will take on Northwest Missouri State in Maryville on Saturday, January 7, at 5:30 p.m.
