TOPEKA, Kan. -- SBU
knocked off Angelo State, 3-1, before dropping a close match to Tarleton
in a rematch from earlier this season, 3-2. The 'Cats came away from
the Lady Blues Fall Classic with a 2-2 record.
Led by Kylie Heim and Ashley Jurgensmeyer, with 12 and 11 kills respectively, the Bearcats battle back after dropping the first set to Angelo State, 25-18. The Rambelles hung with the Bearcats late in each set, tying the second game at 22, as well as the third game at 24, before SBU took control and secured the victory in each. In the fourth set, Angelo led 20-18, before a rally of three straight kills by Kelsey Stewart gave SBU a 22-20 lead, and the 'Cats were able to close out the match with a 25-21 score in the fourth set.
In the final game of the tournament, SBU was pitted against Tarleton State, who they defeated earlier in the season at the Midwestern State Invitational. The Bearcats jumped out to a two game lead against the TexAnns, leading the way with a team attack percentage in the first two games of .297 and .342. After dropping the third set, 25-16, SBU battled to a 23-17 lead in the fourth game, but before they could close out the match, Tarleton went on an eight point run that included three attack errors and two bad sets from the Bearcats to come back and steal the game, 25-23. Tarleton jumped out to an early 9-4 lead in the fifth and final game, but SBU took eight of the next 12 points to battle back to cut the TexAnn lead to 13-12. A pair of kills from Tarleton closed out the match, however, and SBU narrowly dropped the game.
Jurgensmeyer was the lone Bearcat named to the Lady Blues Classic All-Tournament Team.
The Bearcats (9-12 overall) will have two home MIAA matches this week, during the SBU Homecoming festivities. Friday night, October 9, SBU will take on Washburn at 7 p.m. and Saturday, October 10, the Bearcats will host Fort Hays State, also at 7 p.m.
