TOPEKA, Kan. -- The SBU women's tennis team completed the fall portion of the 2009-10 season at the ITA Division II South Central Regional at Topeka. Sixty-four singles players and 32 doubles players competed for a trip to the ITA National Singles and Doubles Championships, October 15-18 in Mobile, Alabama.

Senior Johanna Olsson reached the round of 16 by defeating Ellen Russell of Truman State (6-1 & 6-3), and Erika Leston of Northwest Missouri State (6-1, 4-6, 6-3) before losing to Jaclyn Walker of Abilene Christian (6-1, 6-2).

The doubles teams of Jolee Cook and Faiga Schmidt along with Olsson and Jenna Hendrickson both reached the round of 16 in doubles. Cook and Schmidt stopped Veronica Castilla and Lisa Pendrak of NWMSU (7-6, 3-6, 10-8) but lost to Karolina Cichon and Michaela Romanova of Northeastern State (6-3, 2-6, 10-5). Olsson and Hendrickson defeated Whitley Zitsch and Alyssa Castillo of Washburn (5-7, 6-1, 10-6) and lost to the top-seeded team of Zuzanna Osinka and Emina Spirtovic of Northeastern State (6-3, 6-2).

Previously, SBU competed in both the Oklahoma City Invitational and the Wichita Invitational, but both tournaments were interrupted by rain. Team competition for the Bearcats begins February 26-27 at Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
