Volleyball gains first MIAA win over Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- The SBU volleyball gained their first MIAA win of the season with a 3-1 victory at Missouri Western. The Bearcats won the first two sets by identical 25-20 scores, before the Griffons won the third 25-15. SBU would respond by winning the fourth, 25-19, to close the match.

SBU (6-10, 1-3 MIAA) was led by Alex Smith (15 kills, .355 attack pct.) and Ashley Jurgensmeyer (14 kills, .481 attack). Brianna Wallace led with 34 assists while Marcy Greenwade led the defense with 14 digs. SBU had a team attack percentage in their set wins with .273 in the first, .235 in second and .281 in the fourth.

Kelli Sicner had 15 kills to lead the Griffons while Karin Schmit recorded 16 digs.

SBU will travel north to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri State tomorrow (Saturday) beginning at 5 p.m.
