ST. PAUL, Minn. --
The SBU cross country teams will make a much longer trip to this
weekend's race, traveling nearly nine hours to the University of
Minnesota's 24th Annual Roy Griak Invitational. Saturday's races for the Bearcat squads will begin at 9:45 a.m. for the women and 11:20 a.m. The large meet will feature schools from various NCAA and NAIA levels, as well as a large high school contingent.
The nationally 18th ranked SBU men will look to build on last week's run. Behind
a seventh place individual finish from Michael Pierce, the SBU
men's cross country team took third at last weekend's Missouri Southern Stampede.
Out of 35 total squads, the Bearcat men were third behind Division I
Arkansas and were six points behind MIAA rival Pittsburg State. Individually,
Pierce finished seventh (23:56.89) and was second among Division II
runners. After finishing behind Central Missouri in their first week and Pitt State last week, SBU has slipped to fourth in the USTFCCCA South Central regional rankings.
On
the women's side, Rebecca Brigance was again the top Bearcat finisher
at 85th. Chelsea Strahm was 90th and Andrea
Owensby was 95th. As a team, the SBU women were 16th of 41
teams. SBU has dropped to 10th in the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings.
At last year's Roy Griak, the SBU men were fourth in their division while the SBU women were sixth. Shawn Etzenhouser led the SBU men with an 11th place time while Courtney Ayers had a top ten finish for the SBU women.
