JOPLIN, Mo. --
Behind a seventh place individual finish from Michael Pierce, the SBU
men's cross country team took third at the Missouri Southern Stampede. Out of 35 total squads, the Bearcat men took third behind Division I Arkansas and were six points behind MIAA rival Pittsburg State.
Individually, Pierce finished seventh (23:56.89) and was second among Division II runners. Jeremy Glassmaker was 15th (24:23.53) and Shawn Etzenhouser took 36th (25:03.46). Will Hansen was 56th, Phillip Miller was 66th and Michael McCampbell was 74th.
"Overall we ran really tough," said head coach Corey McElhaney. "Our freshman stepped up -- they were fifth and seventh among our top finishers. A couple of our upperclassmen need to step up to get us where we want to be."
On the women's side, Rebecca Brigance was again the top Bearcat finisher at 85th (19:39.34). Chelsea Strahm was 90th (19:46.66) and Andrea Owensby was 95th (19:50.11). As a team, the SBU women were 16th of 41 teams.
"Our times were a little slower than in the past," said McElhaney. "Our top ten were within ten seconds of each other. We need the rest of the pack to move up."
Next Saturday, the Bearcat squads head to St. Paul, Minn., and the University of Minnesota for the Roy Griak Invitational. The women start at 9:45 a.m. and the men begin at 11:20 a.m.
