WICHITA FALLS, Texas  -- The SBU volleyball Bearcats fall to host Midwestern State, 3-0, before defeating Tarleton State 3-2.

SBU led late in two of the three sets against the Lady Mustangs, but were not able withstand Midwestern State's comeback either time in the opener of the second day of the Midwestern State Invitational. The Bearcats led 21-20 in the first game before giving up five straight points to drop the game, 25-21. SBU had a chance in the third game as they led 22-20 after a kill from Danielle Reed, before Midwestern made another five point run to close out the match. Alex Smith and Kelsey Stewart led the Bearcats with 10 kills apiece, as Ashley Jurgensmeyer had a team-high 7 blocks.

"We got off to a slow start this morning," said head coach Kelly Richardson after the day's events. "But we re-focused between matches, and got where we needed to be mentally for the next match."

Whatever happened between matches seemingly worked, as SBU bounced back in the afternoon game against Tarleton State and won, 3-2. The Bearcats won the first and third matches by scores of 25-23 and 25-20, respectively, but with a 2-1 lead in the fourth game, fell to the Texanns 25-23 to force a fifth and final game. With Tarleton up 14-12, in a game to 15 points, the Bearcats went on a 5-1 run to close out the match, 17-15. "We really stepped up against Tarleton," said Richardson. "Ashley Jurgensmeyer helped control the net, and Alex Smith came up with some big kills. The defense was key, and Marcy Greenwade and Lauren Noble both had good games. We're all excited to get back to practice and improve on this win."

Senior Kelsey Stewart was named to the MSU Invitational All-Tournament Team.

The 'Cats (3-5) have a week in the gym before heading back out to Texas, as they head to Dallas for the Dallas Baptist Invitational. In another two-day event, SBU will face Abilene Christian and Southern Arkansas on Friday, September 11, then take on Arkansas-Monticello and Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday. The first game on Friday kicks off at 11:00 am.
