ROLLA, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcat women's soccer team improved to 2-0 on the young season after stopping Missouri S&T 1-0 on Saturday.
The Bearcats attacked the Lady Miners defense from the start, with two shots on goal, and another chance that was cleared away by an offsides call within the first ten minutes. However, by the end of the first half, neither side could break through, and it wasn't until the 69th minute, when junior Jaymye Ross put away the only goal of the game for SBU, that the scoreless tie was broken. Sophomore Kelly Isaac collected her first assist of the year on the play.
"We played very well," said new SBU head coach Rob Podeyn. "We had a large portion of the first half where we dominated, but we just didn't capitalize on some chances. Once we scored the goal, things got a little dicey for a few minutes in the second. But it was a fun game. It was a good learning experience and they came out believing they can win and believing in each other."
Missouri S&T tried to turn the momentum around after Ross' goal. The Lady Miners had three shots within the next ten minutes after the Bearcats took the lead, but could not get any of them on target. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Link made one final save in the 88th minute to preserve the win, and collect her first career shutout.
"Only one shot of theirs was a dangerous chance," added Podeyn. "Megan controlled the box. She was much stronger this game than the game on Thursday at Quincy. Kelly Isaac had a great game, as did Jaymye Ross and Shannon Roher. Defensively we shut them down."
The Bearcats are off until next Friday, September 4th, when they start a two-game road trip through Texas, starting at Abilene Christian. SBU then continues on to face off against Dallas Baptist on Saturday, September 5th. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m on Friday, and 7 p.m. on Saturday.
