SBU volleyball drops opening matches at ATU Spikefest

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. --
The SBU volleyball opened their 2009 season on the road at the Arkansas Tech Spikefest, but dropped both opening day matches, falling to Alabama-Huntsville, 3-2, and to Cameron, 3-0.

SBU (0-2) started strong against Alabama-Huntsville in the morning opener, winning the first two sets, 25-22 and 25-18. But the Lady Chargers would come back to win the next two sets by identical 25-23 scores. UAH would take the final set 15-7. The Bearcats were led by newcomer Joanna Granzow, with 13 kills and four blocks. Freshman Alex Smith added 12 kills. Junior Marcy Greenwade had 14 digs on defense, while Katie Hyneman chipped in 11 digs.

The afternoon match between SBU and Cameron was controlled by the Aggies who won in three sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-20). Sophomore Ashley Jurgensmeyer led with seven kills, while senior Kelsey Stewart and freshman Kylie Heim had six kills each. Greenwade and Smith each had 11 digs apiece on defense.

The ATU Spikefest action continues tomorrow (Saturday) with matches against Texas A&M-International at 11:00 a.m. and the host Arkansas Tech at 5:00 p.m.
