QUINCY, Ill. -- The SBU soccer Bearcats started out the 2009 season with a win over the Quincy Lady Hawks, 2-1.
Head coach Rob Podeyn collected the win in his first game at SBU, as the Bearcats controlled the game throughout most of the first half. The Bearcats struck first in the 26th minute, when senior Shannon Roher scored on a pass served up on the right side from freshman Taylor Vick. SBU continued to pressure the Quincy defense, and in the 38th minute collected an own goal from a free kick into the box from Caitlin Tull to go ahead 2-0.
"We were up at halftime, but we had more chances to pull further ahead. Quincy is a good team and tested us quite a bit. We didn't play our best, but it's a quality win against a quality opponent," Podeyn said after the match.
Quincy made a push late in the second half, and connected on a goal in the 85th minute, but could not get the equalizer in the remaining five minutes. The Lady Hawks outshot the 'Cats, 22-5, but only six of their shots were on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Link came up big in her college debut, with five saves.
The Bearcats continue their road trip as they take on the Missouri S&T Lady Miners, in Rolla, Mo., this Saturday, August 29th. Kickoff is scheduled for noon.
