JOPLIN, Mo. -- Strong performances from Michael Pierce, Shawn Etzenhouser and Jenny Blair led the SBU track team at the 2009 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The SBU men finished sixth with 65 points and the women were ninth with 43 points.
Highlighting the squad's weekend performance were first place finishes by Blair in the 200 meters, Etzenhouser in the 800 meters and Pierce in the 5000 meters. Pierce was the high point scorer for the men with 22 points, as the Bearcat men finished just two points behind fifth place Fort Hays State.
"We came out and competed hard," said head coach Corey McElhaney. "The weather wasn't the greatest, and some of our performances weren't the best. But they came back in their other events and improved. Jenny (Blair) had a great meet with a provisional mark and two school records. Michael (Pierce) also did well, winning the 5K, getting second in the 1500 meters and fifth in the 800 meters. We now just have to get ready for nationals in a few weeks."
On the women's side, Blair took first in the 200 meters (24.93) and second in the 400 meters (56.78) for a team-leading 18 points in the team standings. Blair's 400 meter time was an NCAA provisional mark and both her 200 and 400 times were school records.
Jennifer Gillespie placed third in the 400 meter hurdles (1:03.70) for five points. Sarah Bowling took fifth in the triple jump (37-07.25) and fourth in the high jump (5-03.00) for nine points total. Courtney Ayers placed third in the 10,000 meters (38:22.60), scoring six points. Mallory Roth scored two points for the team with a seventh place time in the 800 meters while Erica Whitfield also picked up two points with a seventh place finish in the 10,000 meters. The 4x400 meter relay team also picked up a point with an eighth place finish.
Among the men, Pierce
was edged in the 1500 meters by Pitt State's Mujahid Hassaballa by
three-tenths of a second (3:50.84 to 3:51.17). Jeremy Glassmaker took
third (3:52.11) in the same event, helping the 'Cats score 14 points
total in the 1500 meters. Jeff Weseloh picked up a point with an 50.01
time and eighth place finish in the 400 meters. Weseloh's prelim time (48.72) was another school record.
Joining Etzenhouser (1st - 1:53.21 - 10 pts)
with point-scoring finishes in the 800 meters were Pierce in fifth
(1:55.94 - 4 points), Nathaniel Rogers in sixth (1:56.09 - 3 points)
and Vince Tichenor in seventh (1:56.39 - 2 points). Pierce won the 5000
meters with a 14:52.20 time and Glassmaker placed fifth at 15:10.70.
Kyle Grant picked up eight team points with a second place finish in the high jump (6-05.50). The 4x100 meter relay team took fifth (43.29) to score four points while the 4x400 relay squad scored three with a sixth place time (3:20.99). A seventh place finish by Michael McCampbell in the 3000 meter steeplechase was another two points.
