Bearcat baseball blanked by Missouri Southern

JOPLIN, Mo. -- The SBU Bearcat baseball team got a strong starting peformance from freshman Wes Burrell, but could not supply any run support as the Missouri Southern Lions won 1-0 and 9-0 in a doubleheader Tuesday.

In the opener, Burrell allowed only one run on two hits while striking out four in six innings. MSSU starter Ryan Verfurth also allowed just two hits while striking out four in seven innings. The Lions (34-16, 24-10 MIAA) got their only run in the first inning when Zach Caldwell led off with a single, stole second, took third on a balk and scored on a groundout. Kyle Wise and Brendon Cox managed the only hits for the Bearcats (8-38, 6-28 MIAA).

The Lions scored two runs in the third inning of the nightcap, and added four in the fourth and three in the sixth for the 9-0 win. SBU had five hits in game two including a single and double from Justin Crumpley. SBU starter Greg Seay took the loss.

SBU travels to Emporia, Kansas, on Friday and Saturday (May 1-2) for a four game series with Emporia State. Friday's doubleheader begins at 4:00 p.m. while Saturday's twinbill starts at 12:00 p.m.
