BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The "Battle of the Bearcats" went to Northwest Missouri in Friday's baseball doubleheader. The purple SBU Bearcats fell the green NWMSU Bearcats, 12-3 and 13-10, in the first two games of a four-game series.

Northwest Missouri (21-24, 12-18 MIAA) led 4-1 in game one when they erupted for seven runs in the fourth. SBU got solo runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings. SBU starter Greg Seay allowed 12 runs to NWMSU but only two runs were earned. Senior Jason Asher had two hits while fellow senior John Cobb homered for SBU (8-34, 6-24 MIAA). Luke Lavicky, Bill Disselhoff and Matt Stice each drove in two runs for Northwest.

The fourth inning in the second contest was another big one for the visitors, with Northwest getting six runs in the inning due mainly to a grand slam from Brandon Kirsch, who homered twice in the game. SBU would rally for four runs in the fifth. Kyle Wise singled to score A.J. Roller. Wise would score on a double from Justin Barnhart. A single from Cobb would bring home Barnhart and Cobb would cross the plate on a double by Justin Crumpley.

The SBU Bearcats got four more in the eighth when they loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman. Brendon Cox would single up the middle to bring home two runners and moved Asher to third. Asher would score on wild pitch and Cox scored on Wise's triple to cut the Northwest lead to three (12-9). Each team would get single runs in the ninth.

Crumpley and Wise had three hits each for SBU while Cox, Wise and Barnhart drove in two apiece. NWMSU's Kirsch went 3-for-5 with two homers and six RBI.

Tomorrow's (Saturday) start time for the doubleheader between these two teams has been moved up to 11:00 a.m. SBU will recognize four seniors (Asher, Cobb, Ray Kelly and Bobby McMillin) in between games on Senior Day.
