BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The SBU softball team fell twice at home in Friday's
doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha, losing 12-0 and 2-1 to the Mavericks.
The
Bearcats (21-35, 3-15 MIAA) could only manage two hits in the opener,
as they were shut down by UNO starter Melissa Negrete. Negrete improved
to 15-5 on the season with the complete game shutout. UNO's Kristi
Meneely and Treightin Yates drove in two runs each for the Mavs (38-11,
12-4 MIAA) in the rout. UNO led 6-0 after six innings before doubling
their score in the seventh.
It was a pitcher's duel in the
second contest between SBU's Josie Rose and UNO's Lindsey Slocum. Rose
allowed just two runs on three hits but was out-dueled by Slocum, who
held the 'Cats to one run on two hits. Slocum drove in the Mavericks'
first run in the third before a run-scoring triple by Yates put UNO up
2-0 in the fourth.
A two-out rally by SBU in the last of the
seventh came up short. Katrina Munoz reached on an error and stole
second. Munoz scored on a single by BreAnn Proctor before Taressa Gomez
popped out to shortstop to end the game.
SBU will play their
final home games of the season tomorrow (Saturday) when they host
Northwest Missouri State in a doubleheader beginning at noon. SBU is
currently tied with Truman at 3-15 and the teams trail Fort Hays State
(5-11 MIAA) for the eighth spot in the MIAA tournament with Northwest
Missouri in between in ninth at 4-14.
