SBU golf finishes fifth at MIAA Championships; Sellin and Nipper earn All-MIAA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. --
The SBU golf team finished fifth at the MIAA Tournament Championship which concluded Tuesday, April 21 at Shoal Creek Golf Course. That finish was good enough to hold off Truman for fourth place in the MIAA standings in four MIAA-sanctioned events.


The Bearcats high individual finisher was Brad Nipper in 13th place, who recorded a three-round score of 229 (75-77-77). Bryan Steele tied for 17th at 232 while Matt Buschman tied for 20th at 233. Justin Sellin was tied for 34th at 239 and senior Matt Hefley tied for 43rd at 243. The Bearcats three-round team total was 929 (308-314-307).

UCM's Matt Miller took home medalist honors with a one-over par total of 214 helping Central Missouri to a second place finish at the event. The Mules did, however, clinch the MIAA golf title with 38 points ahead of Washburn with 33.5. Washburn won the MIAA Tournament with a 879 team total, but UCM's second place finish gave the Mules the league crown.

Missouri Southern earned 30 points in the four MIAA events where all conference teams participated. The SBU Bearcats earning 22 points, one point ahead of Truman. Points were awarded for tournaments at Pittsburg State, SBU, and Washburn with double points awarded for the MIAA Tournament.

With their performance in the four sanctioned events, SBU juniors Brad Nipper and Justin Sellin earned All-MIAA honors. Justin Yoder of UCM won Player of the Year, with MSSU's Andy Hoganmiller earning Freshman of the Year. UCM's Tim Poe was MIAA Coach of the Year.

As MIAA champion, UCM earned the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Regional. The rest of the field is scheduled to be released Friday (April 24).
