BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The #21 SBU Bearcat men's tennis team defeated the Missouri St. Louis Tritons 7-2, in their final home match of the regular season.
SBU swept the doubles matches to open up the non-conference match. SBU seniors Emilio El Alabi and Agustin Mollar scored straight set victories, as did #6 Tyler Welch, though SBU's #1 Marton Zsiga, who's currently ranked 26th nationally, was upset by UMSL's Andi Dimke in three sets. Jorge Margiotta scored a victory at #4 after UMSL's Alex Cherman retired.
The Bearcats (13-7) will enter the MIAA Championships as the #3 seed and will take on sixth-seeded Nebraska-Omaha at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 25. Should the SBU Bearcats win their first round matchup with the UNO Mavs, SBU would take on the second-seeded and 25th-ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. A loss in the first round would also have the SBU Bearcats playing at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, but on the loser's side of the bracket against the loser of the Truman-Emporia State matchup.
The MIAA Championships will be held at the Plaza Tennis Center.The tennis teams will practice at the facility April 24, with the competition beginning the next morning at 8:30 a.m. for the women and 10 a.m. for the men. All nine MIAA women's teams and six men's teams will be in action on day one. The championship matches will take place at 9 a.m. April 26 for the men and noon that day for the women. The winners get the conference's automatic berths to the NCAA Division II Tournaments.
