Softball drops two at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. -- The SBU softball team dropped a doubleheader at Emporia State, falling 6-2 and 12-4.

The Hornets (31-12, 10-4 MIAA) jumped on top in the first game with three runs in the first inning. Krysta Baderdeen singled in BreAnn Proctor in the second inning for the first run by the Bearcats (20-32, 3-13 MIAA). ESU would add two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth inning. Baderdeen would get another RBI in the seventh, when she grounded out to score Aleece Nalbandian.

Baderdeen had two hits and two RBI while Proctor was 3-for-3 for the Bearcats. Megan Dennis picked up the complete game for ESU while Brittney Wood took the loss.

SBU got the early lead in the second contest with three runs in the first inning. An error by ESU allowed McKenzie Mortimer and Nalbandian to score. An second error allowed Taressa Gomez to cross the plate. Emporia would counter with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, three runs in the second and another tally in the third.

The Bearcats would get a run in the fifth on a single from Gomez. A run by the Hornets in the bottom of the sixth made the ESU lead eight runs, which ended the game on the run-rule. Mortimer went 3-for-3 in the game for the Bearcats. Angela Mahan drove in three for ESU.

SBU's games with Ouachita Baptist on Monday, April 20 were cancelled. The Bearcats' next contest will be a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 22 in Rolla, Mo., against Missouri S&T beginning at 2:00 p.m.
